Balance Board Bells is an extension of my first collaboration with composer P. Spadine in 2017. Pat made me a manually operated percussive gift and I placed it on my handmade wooden balance board, made after my bike accident, in order to audibly hear the strength growing in my legs after subsequent years of daily physical therapy.

The 2019 version includes bells bolted to a plexiglass octagon, which references the shape of a stop sign, the sign which the driver who hit me while on my bike ignored as she plowed into me. The clear form is to give the illusion that I am floating on air as I move. At the beginning of the piece, Spadine drops all of the marbles onto the balance board and removes them one by one, much as one removes jumbled thoughts as they meditate.
