SARS-CoV-2 and the ever-mutating virus strains has greatly impacted how immunocompromised people navigate public and private life. The lack of physical touch during these trying times has stimulated this new series of sculptures.
The sculptures are made from Beneficial Bacteria Biodegradable Milk Polymer (a biodegradable plastic made from raw fermented cow’s milk), encapsulated dried medicinal plants, and foraged feathers. The handle is formed from the pressure of my hand squeezing the substrate into shape, resulting in an empty space – a substitute for a hand to hold.
The soothing scent of lavender’s purple blooms strikes the olfactory sense as one strokes their skin with the tender touch of the feathers’ fringes, offering a gentle reprieve from the endurance of isolation as a means of survival from a plague.
The sculptures are pinned to upholstered panels of hand-dyed raw silk, a surface which serves as their death bed as they slowly decompose.
